Magazine: SYNTHASIS Title: REVIEWS - FAUST & SHORTEE/DIGITAL SOUL Words: MAX SIDMAN Issue Date: 11.01 Though
Faust is known primarily as a hip-hop DJ, this is not a hip-hop record. Sure the
beats are rooted in the genre, but the music is so much deeper than just the beats.
Of course that’s not to say that this is grand, orchestrated music; in fact it’s
quite minimal — for the sake of easy comparison, think DJ Krush. The beats of Digital Soul are the foundation over which Faust and Shortee lay keyboards, bass, live drums and a whole host of accents and samples, through which polyrhythms create depth and character without adding more noise, the result is a tight 15-track recording of rich and full yet minimalist tunes. Overall, the Digital Soul vibe is dichotomous — big, strong and full, at the same time, open, airy and comfortable. back to press main | ||
