Magazine: XLR8R Title: VIDEO/DVD: DECK EDUCATION Words: TONY WARE Issue Date: 10.02 Short
of stature but never ambition, Atlanta, DJ/Producer Shortee-along with Eyekiss
Films and her personal and professional partner Faust, has put together
the first in a planned series of instructional video/DVDs geared towards aspiring
DJs. The upgrade to a home video, SHORTEE’s
DJ 101 is a professionally shot & edited multiple angle production that
picks up where Shortee’s experience at conferences such as New York’s Take Back
the Decks left off: offering a conversational but not aggravatingly ad-libbed
introduction to the rudiments of Djing. Noting that tapes such as Shure’s Turntablism
101 jumped right into beatjuggling on the assumption that not a lot needs explaining—as
if the average beginner would never ask about all them messy stickers all over
Rob Swift’s records—SHORTEE’s
DJ 101 logically builds from literally building a turntable mixer set-up
to mixing to scratching to building a routine. While most viewers will probably
fast forward through how to plug in RCA cables, the details are still there, even
including user-friendly pop-up windows highlighting when a quick, hard-to-see
motion is done. Shortee’s own exclusive animated graphics and musical interludes—as
well as realistic testimonials from Djs Faust, Craze, Danny the Wildchild & Phantom
45—pepper the production. Shortee provides a quick but not distractingly edited
video that’s much more than your traditional DJ-video’s collection of unexplained
showcases. SHORTEE’s DJ 101 is certainly not short of scope. SHORTEE’s
DJ 101 video & DVD (loaded with extras!) is available in online at www.faustandshortee.com
